Preservation and Freedom

Deborah Fleming

Ashland University

"Preservation and Freedom" discusses the importance of farmland preservation and certain individual efforts to preserve farmland in southern Ashland County, Ohio. The article concludes with a discussion of the relationship of preservation and freedom, stating that we in America need a new definition of economy that includes the long-term ramifications of what we do and asserts that our national goals should include more than addiction to progress, efficiency, and increasing materialism; it should include preserving our relationship to the land that made us who and what we are.

Key Words: farmland preservation • green economy • sustainability
